We believe in Jesus Christ as the risen Son of God who alone provides atonement for our sin and gives us eternal life, and who sends us the Holy Spirit to lead us in life. Originally joining First EPC as Associate Pastor in 2006, Pastor Joyce took on the role of lead pastor in March 2020. Talk about God’s timing! When she’s not serving First EPC, Pastor Joyce enjoys bowling, cheering for her Ohio State Buckeyes, and spending time with her loving husband Brian and their cat Beau. [Read More](/meet-our-pastor) Chad joined the First EPC team in 2023 and has had the incredible privilege of leading worship and music ministries for over 14 years. When he's not making music, you can find Chad watching science fiction and documentaries. Dedicated to children’s education, Ellen strives to bring God’s word to the forefront of your family life. While she has been the team leader of children and family ministries since 2020, Ellen has been an avid volunteer with the team since childhood! She’s also a houseplant enthusiast and a proud Purdue Boilermaker. With a background in youth mentorship spanning more than 25 years, Joe lives a commitment to walking alongside young people as they navigate identity, purpose, and belonging. He has spent the past 10 years working for the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO) in partnership with First EPC. He serves on the campuses of Indiana University Kokomo and Ivy Tech Kokomo. Joe has a Masters in Clinical Psychology and Certificate in Mediation and Negotiation from Abilene Christian University! Heather’s journey with Little School began as a parent—she loved the preschool program so much when her daughters attended that she simply never wanted to leave! These days, you can find Heather assisting teachers in classrooms, leading chapel time, getting to know families, or hanging out in the Little School office with the preschool pets- 2 axolotls. Outside of school, Heather loves time spent with her daughters and husband, reading, kayaking, and has a fun goal of visiting all 50 Since joining the First EPC staff in 2018, James has become our jack of all trades! When not at his desk handling the financials, you can find him working on various building projects throughout the church. Fun fact: he’s in Men Of Note, the barbershop chorus that meets on Monday nights at First EPC! If you call the church, you’ll probably reach Anna! Having attended First EPC all her life, Anna joined the team in 2023 and is devoted to assisting church members and ministries in any way she can. With a love of all things creative, Anna is also the graphic design guru of First EPC. When not at her desk, you can find her playing with her cats, in the middle of a craft project, or volunteering with Children’s Ministries. After retiring from their professional careers, Steve and Anita chose to serve First EPC, keeping our facilities clean and beautiful! You may also find them serving around the church in their roles for the Kokomo Great Banquet. Outside of work, Steve and Anita enjoy traveling, spending time at the lake, trying new restaurants, and loving on their dog, Joie! Shirlee is a dedicated member of our church family, bringing a wealth of experience and compassion to her position as our pastoral care assistant. As a former nurse, she has a deep understanding of care and support and has seamlessly embraced this role. Shirlee's nurturing spirit and commitment to serving others shine through in every interaction! One of our CCO students, Kayden joined the First EPC team in 2024 and has been a wonderful fit! Kayden joined the CCO in 2023 and jumped right into making CCO feel like home for many others. He serves as one of the officers at IUK, carrying out ministry on campus. Along with weekly youth group, he also helps with VBS, mission trips, and so much more! Sylvia has been a lifelong Christian and has served as our accompanist since 2019. She has worked with numerous musicians around the Boston and New York areas. She has extensive experience teaching lessons and playing as a collaborative pianist for instrumentalists and vocalists. Our **nursery** is dedicated to children aged two years old and younger. Parents and family members are invited to drop their kids off with one of our loving nursery volunteers, or you can choose to stay in the nursery with your child. The worship service is live-streamed into the room, so you won't miss a thing if you choose to stay! Our **preschool** class is for all kids aged two years old through kindergarten. Each week, we focus on a story from the Bible, sing songs, make crafts, and play games together! All of these fun activities are carefully planned to help point your child toward knowing and loving Jesus. Our **elementary** Children's Church class is for all kids in first through fifth grades. Our elementary students stay with their families in the worship service through the opening music and prayer time, and then they head to class with their friends! We use *The Gospel Project* curriculum during class. *The Gospel Project* studies the stories of Scripture with special emphasis on how each story points to Christ and contributes to God’s bigger rescue story. and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” We are honored to disciple your precious kids alongside you on Sunday mornings, and keeping them safe while they are in our care is our top priority! All of our staff, volunteers, and church leaders undergo a background check and complete an online safety training program each year. They also receive in-person training on First EPC's Safe Child Policy at least once per year. First-time visitors are asked to fill out a check-in form for their child upon arrival. Please be sure to let our volunteers know if your child has any special food allergies or medical needs, so we can make appropriate accommodations to keep your child safe. We look forward to seeing you there!** This group explores the challenges Christians face in a secular world, equipping participants to answer questions about their faith as instructed by the call to action in 1 Peter 3:15. Resources include the teachings of well-known Christian apologists like C.S. Lewis, Lee Strobel, Greg Koukl, and Frank Turek. This group focuses on spiritual growth by exploring scripture and its application to daily life. The class typically addresses prayer concerns, uses DVD teaching materials from well-known pastors, and often supplements points made during the Sunday sermons at First EPC. Participants in this group enjoy an in-depth and insightful Bible study. The class reads the Bible aloud and participates in a guided conversation about the day's reading. Days for Girls sewing group meets Tuesdays at First EPC from 9:30 to Noon in Room 205-206. Women’s Bible Study meets on Wednesdays at 1:00pm in Room 205-206 from September to May. We welcome all newcomers. Join us every Wednesday at 5:30pm for **free food and fellowship**! Enjoy a meal in our Fellowship Hall with members of our community and church family. We have a **Toiletry Pantry** on the first Wednesday of every month. We are taking a hiatus over the summer, but we’ll be back in September! We offer three fun classes for your children during our 9:30am Sunday morning worship service! Our **nursery** is dedicated to children aged two years old and younger. Parents and family members are invited to drop their kids off with one of our loving nursery volunteers, or you can choose to stay in the nursery with your child. The worship service is live-streamed into the room, so you won't miss a thing if you choose to stay! Our **preschool** class is for all kids aged two years old through kindergarten. Each week, we focus on a story from the Bible, sing songs, make crafts, and play games together! Our **elementary** Children's Church class is for all kids in first through fifth grades. Our elementary students stay with their families in the worship service through the opening music and prayer time, and then they head to class with their friends! EPiC Youth is First EPC's fellowship and training program for **6th - 12th graders**. Here we grow in our understanding of being in Christ, a gifted part of the church, and one who brings the Kingdom of God into all of life. Our goal is that students will be well prepared to lead in church and life. **Youth Group** is on Wednesday afternoon from 4pm-6pm. We start with fun and end with fun while sandwiching some sincere devotion to Jesus in between. We meet most weeks throughout the year except for major holidays. **Sunday School** occurs once a month, usually on the second Sunday, beginning with lunch at 11:30am. We then have three 45-minute learning sessions and one gaming session. We wrap up by 3pm for pick-up. CCO (Coalition of College Outreach) meets every Wednesday at 7pm! Meet us in Room 201 where our sessions rejuvenate both your spirit and soul. At 7 PM, embark on a journey through faith with our study sessions. At 8 PM, feel the power of collective prayer, and by 8:30 PM, relax with games that spark friendship and joy. Jesus tells of a master who prepared a great banquet and invited many guests, saying “Come, for everything is now ready.” After so many excuses for not attending by his invited guests, the master became angry and ordered his servants, “Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.” After this had been done and still room remained, the master told his servant, “Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.” Then, as additional invitations were given, the banquet was presented to his guests. The result of the master’s invitation was to feast and fellowship at a banquet given by God. The parable above provides the picture for the Great Banquet. Like its counterparts, Cursillo, Emmaus, and Tres Dias, this movement examines Christianity as a lifestyle. The Great Banquet is an orderly, structured weekend designed to strengthen and renew the faith of Christians. Through a combined effort of laity and clergy, the Great Banquet focuses on the renewal of the church. The Great Banquet is a 72-hour experience, beginning on Thursday evening and ending Sunday evening. For three days, guests live and study together in a worshipful time of singing, prayer and discussion. During each of the fifteen talks given by laity and clergy, the theme of God’s grace is presented. Guests participate in the daily celebration of Holy Communion and examine more fully the presence of Christ in His body of believers. They personally experience His grace through the prayers and acts of a loving, Christian support community. **One of the most important parts of the Great Banquet is the follow-up. Although the weekend lasts only three days, guests are invited to use its lessons for the rest of their lives. After attending the Great Banquet, they are challenged to:** To become familiar with the Great Banquet, let’s look first at the history of its counterparts, the Cursillo and the Walk to Emmaus. The Cursillo (3-day course in Christianity) began in Spain in the 1940s in the Catholic Church. It spread to the United States and evolved for Protestants into the Walk to Emmaus under the auspices of the Upper Room and the United Methodist Church. An Emmaus Movement was started by the First Presbyterian Church in Madisonville, Kentucky in 1982. After a 10-year history of the Walk to Emmaus in Madisonville, Rev. John E. Pitzer and lay people from First Presbyterian Church formed the Great Banquet. Governed by an ecumenical board of directors and using the “Cursillo model”, but with a different image, the Great Banquet continues to emphasize personal Christian discipleship. The Great Banquet Movement is institutionally sponsored by local church groups in these areas. Lampstand Ministries was formed as a covering corporation to move the Great Banquet Movement to other areas. Luke 14: 15-24) The focus of the Great Banquet is to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and to make Him known. The objective of the Great Banquet is to continue the 3-day weekend by serving Christ in local churches, homes and work places. To live a life of grace and to respond to higher levels of Christian discipleship becomes the purpose of the Great Banquet. The Awakening is an orderly, structured weekend designed for teens who have completed their freshman year of high school through those who are in their senior year of high school. The Awakening is designed to bring participants to an awareness of each one’s need to accept Jesus as their Savior, and then begin to make Him Lord in all areas of life. The focus of the Awakening is commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. During the event, one will be inspired, challenged, and equipped for a close, personal relationship with Jesus, and for Christian action in the home, school, work places, and community. The Awakening is three days in which “sleepers” live and study together in a worshipful time of singing, prayer and discussion. During each of the fifteen talks heard on the weekend, the theme of awakening to God’s call on one’s life is presented. Sleepers will examine more fully the reality and presence of Christ in His body of believers. BELONGING. PURPOSE. # **WHAT WE OFFER** EPiC Youth is First EPC's fellowship and training program for 6th - 12th graders. Here we grow in our understanding of being in Christ, a gifted part of the church, and one who brings the Kingdom of God into all of life. Our goal is that students will be well prepared to lead in church and life. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. You belong here. You are part of a family on a journey to discover how you can uniquely live like Jesus. Sometimes it requires blasting someone with a nerf dart, sometimes challenging yourself to tear down walls, and sometimes it means practicing how to worship God in all of life. *3 Big Questions that Change Every Teenager*\-Kara Powell & Brad M. Griffin Youth Group is on Wednesday afternoon from 4pm-6pm. We start with fun and end with fun while sandwiching some sincere devotion to Jesus in between. We meet most Wednesdays throughout the year except for major holidays. And with parent permission, we might leave the church for a movie or other activity. Sunday School occurs once a month, usually on the second Sunday, beginning with lunch at 11:30am. We then have three 45-minute learning sessions and one gaming session. It all wraps up by 3pm for pick-up. Service opportunities happen throughout the year. We have served at the Kokomo Rescue Mission, testing nerf blasters. We've played games with new friends at Waterford Place. THEY WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME WHEN THEY CONTEND WITH THEIR OPPONENTS IN COURT. # TECH TEAM The Chancel Choir supports the life and ministry of the church through the pursuit of choral excellence. More than just a musical ensemble, the choir is a community where members grow spiritually as they offer their voices in service to God. Each rehearsal provides an opportunity to engage both heart and mind in preparation for leading the congregation in song and praise. The choir sings in Sunday services about once a month and participates in special gatherings throughout the year, including Christmas Eve and Good Friday. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. from September through May, and all are warmly invited to join. The Westminster Handbell Choir serves the Lord with joy and dedication through the art of English handbell ringing. The ensemble shares its music in Sunday services about once a month and takes part in the annual Kokomo Handbell Festival the first weekend in March. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. from September through May. The Praise Team is a musical group dedicated to leading the congregation in song during Sunday morning services. Along with musical preparation, rehearsals provide a time for reflection on corporate worship and the specific scripture passage for Sunday morning’s service. The team includes singers and instrumentalists playing guitar, piano, percussion, and other instruments. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to join us in lifting our hearts and voices together to glorify the Lord through music. The Tech Team supports our services through excellence in sound, projection, and livestream production. Working alongside the Praise Team, they help create a seamless and engaging worship experience each Sunday. The team meets on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. for setup and rehearsal. New volunteers are always welcome—training is provided, and no prior experience is necessary.
